China's Shaolin Temple, a Buddhist Temple with a history spanning over one thousand-years, that gained its fame through the development of Kungfu.
However, there is one aspect of this temples history, that is often overlooked. The art of natural medicine. For centuries, eminent monks of Shaolin developed secret recipes to treat injuries and alleviate body pain.
One such formula, calls for a careful selection of herbal plants with healing properties, to be boiled down until they form a magical black paste. The paste is then coated to a patch for treating the injuries and pains sustained by Shaolin Monks during practice.
The above pictures show part of the process involved in making patches.
In ancient times, making patch was a time-consuming and labor-intensive efforts for the monks at Shaolin Temple, which may take months. One of the Shaolin medical works documented the following:
"Firstly they needed to collect all the medical herbs from the mountain around the temple, processed and cut them into small pieces. After weighing, the herbs were soaked into sesame oil for a week time, followed by the mixture being heated with firewood up to a certain level at which the herbal pieces were screened off. With adding of bonding materials, the oil was heated again till it became ready for use as patch paste. The super hot paste was then submerged into cold water for a week time again for detoxification. Finally the herbal pain relief paste was coated onto cloth or papers to treat injuries of monks when practising Kungfu."
